President Solyom rejects Slovak criticism of recent visit

Budapest, October 6 (MTI) - Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom, whose recent private visit to Komarno, S Slovakia, was strongly criticised by Slovak PM Robert Fico, dismissed the criticism in an interview published by national daily Nepszabadsag on Saturday.
Solyom called the visit "very good and important", an obvious step by a president who wants to strengthen ties with ethnic kin in neighbouring countries.
The Slovak PM accused Solyom of availing his private visit to criticise the Slovak parliament's recent resolution on the inviolability of post-WWII Benes decrees.
Solyom noted that in Komarno he had spoken about the Benes decrees in response to a question from the Slovak press. "Of course, I repeated my opinion which condemns the move and complies with the European norms," he said.
Solyom noted that neither Romania, nor Serbia had raised any objections to his similar visits, and said that Hungary considered it normal that the Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic had met with ethnic Slovaks at the Pilis Hills during his recent visit to Hungary.
