Brussels, EU (AHN) - The European Union's Kosovo future rely on fresh round of direct talks between Belgrade and Pristina, which will be held in Brussels to break the deadlock. Both the regions are scheduled to meet today, Sunday, in the EU headquarters in Brussels to move ahead on the talks because of the impending Dec. 10 deadline.
The second round of talks is based on "Troika-facilitated direct talks" after Belgrade and Pristina failed last month to negotiate on how much autonomy Kosovo should be granted.
EU envoy Wolfgang Ischinger told Agency France Press, "There is quite a distance to be covered if really we want to reach an agreement. After the end of what I would call an exploratory period, this is a decisive phase."
The negotiations will be mediated by the delegates representing the European Union, the United States and Russia, which actually form the Troika. According to reports, the negotiations are expected to last an hour longer than the New York round.
Talks between the parties failed last year as well. Those talks were organized by the United Nations. Serbia, supported by Russia, has always stressed that Kosovo falls in its territory and it is ready to offer the province wider autonomy. On the other hand, Ethnic Albanians, supported by the U.S. and the EU, demand its complete independence.
